Norman McLiberty

Screen Shot 2013-05-26 at 11.39.09 AMNorman has been a recognizable face at Blue Angel for several years, and we are pleased to have him in our team of instructors! Norman is a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, and he has this to say about himself:

I was born in Verazruz, but I have lived in many parts of Mexico. When I made the decision to become a diver, I was planning to start as an industrial diver… but I made a mistake in an internet search, looking for “technical diving” rather than “industrial” and so, ended up in Cozumel for my training. I started with a Discover Scuba program, then Open Water, and decided rather than pursue the industrial program, I would continue on to get certified as a Divemaster. About a year later, I was invited to start working at Blue Angel as a DM, and happily accepted.
That changed my life. At Blue Angel, I have made friends who are like family to me. I quickly gained experience working at the side of some of the best guides on the island, and I continue to learn as much as I can from all of them. I began to develop my own style; I realized that I enjoyed diving with beginners, helping them improve their skills and comfort in the water. Blue Angel encouraged me to become an instructor, so here I am! I am excited about the future. Not just to be able to help divers improve, but also having the right tools and the right education and training to be able to teach diving and create good divers who enjoy diving from the very first time they do it, just like I did. It means a lot to me to be able to share my passion!

  1. I was lucky enough to have Norman dive with me when I was in Cozumel, staying at the Blue Angel, last time. Norman was INCREDIBLE, as I’m still a little nervous (being a prairie girl and all); he was funny & very kind and he allowed me go at my own pace. I am so glad to find him in this new most rewarding position where I know he will help many, many more! Congrats, Norman! Looking forward to you teaching my girls next time we’re out!!!
